DROPPING IN WITH ANDY MAC
The Life of a Pro Skateboarder
by Andy Macdonald with Theresa Foy DiGeronimo

As a baby he flipped himself upside down in his jolly jumper. As a kid he rode his Big Wheel so hard it broke in half. When he received his first skateboard at age twelve, he had found his vehicle of choice and his life was forever changed. In DROPPING IN WITH ANDY MAC, world champion skateboarder Andy Macdonald shares his experiences, victories and lessons learned on the road to becoming one of the most influential professional skateboarders of all time.
With eleven X Games medals (eight gold), a Guinness World Record, and seven consecutive years as World Cup Skateboarding Overall Champion, Andy’s list of accomplishments reads like a history of skateboarding. But it wasn’t always an easy ride for him to reach the_literal and figurative-_heights he’s achieved today. There were years of scraped knees as well as scraping by with little recognition before Andy made his mark. In his own forthright way, Andy Mac explains the importance of perseverance and dedication, and that the best way to succeed is by trying, again and again and again. His lesson - without a lot of spills along the way, you don’t appreciate the view from the top.

San Diego Skateboarding Legends Bucky Lasek and
Andy Macdonald Take Gold and Silver at First Ever

X Games Global Championship in San Antonio

Carlsbad, CA — May 19, 2003 — Skateboard Vert, which has become the cornerstone of the X Games, was dominated by San Diego locals and Team U.S.A. members Bucky Lasek and Andy Macdonald on Saturday night, May 17. With Lasek and Macdonald’s one-two finish, USA won the Vert competition and helped contribute to the U.S.A. win at the first ever EXPN Global X Championship, which pitted the top two action sports athletes from countries all over the globe against each other for a chance at an overall win.

Even before the runs got underway, Andy Mac made the prediction for his number two finish and Bucky’s number one, which would later prove true and lead to the U.S.A. victory. Andy Macdonald came into the first round showing Texas why he is a 8-time X Game gold medalist, throwing down a technical and clean performance to earn him 92.33 points and the top position going into round two. In typical Lasek style, Bucky took Gold at the Skateboard Vert competition Saturday night at the X Games Global Championship, held at The Alamodome in San Antonio, TX. His second run earned a 94.0, and was highlighted by impressive tricks and big frontside airs — clearly the best run of the evening.

"I'm grateful to pull this one off for the team and personally for myself coming off of an injury and a not so good record of contests this year," said Lasek. "I was stoked on the ramp and it's been a long time since I had that much fun skating at a contest. Go U.S.A!"

Both Lasek and Macdonald can be seen next at ESPN X Games IX, 2003 held this year in Los Angeles and aired August 16-21, 2003 on ESPN, ESPN 2 and ABC Sports.

As a world-class athlete, celebrity, and author, Andy’s down-to-earth demeanor and accessibility, coupled with his unprecedented level of contest victories and skateboarding achievements have distinguished him as one of the most successful and popular professional skateboarders today. Andy is the current World Cup Skateboarding overall points champion, having held that title for seven consecutive years. He also has earned eight X-Games gold medals, first-place at the 2000 Gravity Games, and set a Guinness World Record for his skateboard ramp jump of nearly 57 feet. His likeness was published on a U.S. postage stamp, and he was the focus of a leading public service announcement for The Partnership for a Drug-Free America, which brought him to the White House to speak and to introduce President Bill Clinton. Additional accomplishments include an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, 60 Minutes and more. In addition to sponsor support from andy mac™ brand footwear, apparel, accessories, safety gear and skateboards, Andy enjoys endorsement relationships with SoBe Beverage Company, Swatch Watches, and Skatewave. Andy continues to skate the worldwide pro tour, encouraging young kids everywhere to participate in his favorite sport. Andy’s inspirational autobiography with Simon & Schuster "Dropping in With Andy Mac", was released May 2003.

Andy Macdonald

A Biography

Eleven X Games medals (8 gold), a Guinness World Record, seven consecutive World Cup Skateboarding overall points championships, a U.S. postage stamp modeled after his image, a leading public service announcement for The Partnership for a Drug-Free America, and appearances on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and 60 Minutes among others, Andy Macdonald's laundry list of accomplishments has cemented his position as one of the top professional skateboarders in the world both on and off his board. Andy’s unique style and steadfast determination have made him one of the most popular athletes in the sport today.

After graduating from high school in Boston, Massachusetts in 1992, Andy set out to San Diego in a beat up old Datsun with only four hundred dollars in his pocket to realize his dream of becoming a professional skateboarder. He met that mark in 1994 through hard work and dedication and continues to set and shatter goals set before him.

Andy’s down-to-earth demeanor and accessibility have distinguished him as one of the nicest guys in skateboarding. Choosing to use his notoriety as a positive influence for youth, Andy approached The Partnership for a Drug-Free America in 1999 and became the first athlete to be featured in their celebrity public service announcements. The year-long television ad campaign was launched at the White House, where upon conclusion of his own speech, Andy introduced then President of the United States, Bill Clinton, to the throngs of media in attendance. Due to its popularity, Andy's P.S.A. was selected to continue airing for two additional years! More recently, Andy’s personality won over Jay Leno, host of The Tonight Show, as Andy not only sat in the famous hot seat during a witty interview with Leno, but also went on to perform a string of flawless skateboarding tricks in the studio on specially constructed ramps. The San Diego Hall of Champions Museum in California and the Australian Gallery of Sport and Olympic Museum have included artifacts donated by Andy.

In addition to his alignment with the Partnership, Andy lends support to the Youth Reading Programs and currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Mission Valley YMCA where he designed the branch skatepark. He is one of the founding members of the United Professional Skateboarders Association (UPSA) and is leading the charge for the construction of public skateparks nationwide.

Throughout his career, Andy has attracted an impressive list of sponsors who are eager to align their companies with his positive attitude and uncompromising work ethic. Through the support of partner companies, Andy has released his own signature lines of andy mac™ branded gear including andy mac™ Footwear, available at Payless Shoe Source, andy mac™ apparel, andy mac™ Skateboards, and andy mac™ Safety Gear. Andy is also endorsed by such notable companies as SoBe Beverage Company, Swatch Watches and Skatewave.

Andy continues to skate the worldwide pro tour, encouraging young kids everywhere to participate in his favorite sport. Look out for the debut of Andy’s inspirational autobiography with Simon & Schuster

"Dropping in With Andy Mac" to be released May 2003.

Lego, Andy Macdonald, and CASL Connect Together
(Posted 7/3/2002)

What do skateboarding and legos have to do with each other? They're both cool and fun for kids! In a non-obvious interconnection, LEGO, the California Amateur Skateboard League (CASL), and Andy Macdonald agree to cross-promote for a second year.

LEGO Company Continues to Cater to Skateboard Enthusiasts with BIONICLE

LEGO Continues to Cater to Skateboard Enthusiasts with BIONICLE™, Renews Partnership with Skateboarding Pro Andy Macdonald

ENFIELD, Connecticut – LEGO® Americas announced a renewed partnership with Andy Macdonald, seven-time X-Games skateboarding gold-medallist and six-time World Cup Skateboarding overall points champion. The world’s third largest toy company signed Macdonald for a second year of sponsorship to promote its wildly successful line of BIONICLE™ action heroes.

The company also renewed partnership with the California Amateur Skateboard League (C.A.S.L.), a grassroots organization that encourages young skateboarders by providing safe venues for them to practice, compete in and excel at the sport of skateboarding.

“The average age of BIONICLE consumers last year was slightly older than the average LEGO enthusiast. These kids aren’t easy to reach through standard communication vehicles,” says Colin Gillespie, brand manager for BIONICLE in the Americas. “We went outside the box and found partnerships in Andy and C.A.S.L. that are relevant and targeted, and we’ve worked hard to keep our relationships with both meaningful. We’re thrilled to team up with them again to continue the success of BIONICLE.”

As part of his agreement with LEGO, Macdonald will sport the BIONICLE logo on the deck of his board, will make appearances at BIONICLE events planned for 2002 and will participate in BIONICLE promotions at various locations this summer. The company also may use Macdonald’s likeness in promotional materials.
“BIONICLE, skateboarding and kids are a perfect match,” says Andy Macdonald. “BIONICLE is cutting- edge and creative, and it’s awesome to be skating for the mighty heroes of Mata Nui again this year.”
For the second year, LEGO Americas will be a presenting sponsor of C.A.S.L., helping to offset their costs of organizing and implementing regional amateur skateboarding competition series in northern, central and southern California, and the culminating California State Championship in December.

BIONICLE is a series of quick-build, collectible action heroes accompanied by an epic story line. After its release in the summer of 2001, BIONICLE quickly became one of the top-selling toys in the industry and has gained popularity with children around the world. The line was recognized by the Toy Industry Association with two Toy of the Year awards for “Most Innovative Toy” and “Best Boy Toy,” and continues to top the sales charts for overall toys with new Bohrok foes released in February.

“BIONICLE has revolutionized the way children think of and play with LEGO toys,” says Andrew Black, president, LEGO Americas. “Translating LEGO values of creativity, imagination and construction, BIONICLE delivers an innovative play experience in a story-driven universe, bringing a new face to the construction category and reaching a new population of kids.

“The success of BIONICLE lies not only in product innovation, but also in innovative marketing,” Black continues. “Premiere partners like McDonald’s, DC Comics and Upper Deck, combined with the pure passion for skateboarding demonstrated by Andy and C.A.S.L., have helped us achieve a strong success with our own intellectual property. We look forward to announcing more strong partners for BIONICLE this year.”

(Posted 11/16/2001)

(provided by PR firm)

Ocean Beach, Calif. - Andy Macdonald, professional skateboarder and five-time World Cup Skateboarding overall points champion, has announced the release of the first-ever Andy Macdonald signature model watch, the 'Swatch Special Edition Andy Macdonald Watch'.

This special edition watch, complete with an aluminum casing and yellow leather band, is part of the Swatch Irony collection. The chronograph watch features phosphorescent hour and minute hands along with a silhouette of Andy Macdonald performing a "Japan Air" on the face.

"The aluminum casing is what makes my signature Swatch light weight yet durable, and with a yellow band, you know it must be mine," says Macdonald.

The Swatch Special Edition Andy Macdonald watch is shock resistant and water resistant to 100 feet and features a one-year limited warranty. The watch is available for purchase at Swatch stores nationwide or by logging on to www.swatch.com.

Soon after announcing the Swatch watch described above, Andy announced "Andy Macdonald's Big Air Straight Jump play set" and "signature Brigade miniature skateboard" in conjunction with Tech Deck. Now skating enthusiasts can bring the action home and put their miniature skateboarding skills to the test.
Based on Andy's real life Guinness World Record jump, Andy Macdonald's Big Air Straight Jump play set allows miniature skateboarders to go for big air 'just like' Andy Macdonald. The play set includes an adjustable three-foot long ramp, along with stickers from Macdonald's sponsors, including Airwalk, Bones, Brigade, Grind King, Harbinger, Pro-Tec, SoBe, Split, and Swatch. The jump set also connects with all Tony Hawk skatepark ramps to expand into the supreme miniature skateboarding skatepark.
"My new Tech Deck Big Air Straight Jump is just like the one I skated when I flew over four cars," says Macdonald. "Well, this one is a little less scary on the drop in."

Andy Macdonald's Big Air Straight Jump play set and the Andy Macdonald Brigade miniature skateboard are currently available at nationwide chains and local specialty stores nationwide.

About Andy Macdonald:
In October 1999, Macdonald secured a Guinness World Record, where along with his watch sponsor Swatch, he constructed an Evel Kneivel-style skateboard ramp and proceeded to jump over four parked cars for a total distance of 52 feet 10 inches. In typical Andy style, his record would not last long. Just a few months later, in a competition held in Lake Havasu, Arizona, Andy managed to not only out-distance the other competitors, but he outdid his own record with a jump of 56 feet 10.75 inches.
Andy Macdonald's laundry list of accomplishments includes seven X-Games gold medals, a first-place finish at the 2000 Gravity Games, a Guinness World Record, five consecutive World Cup Skateboarding overall points championships, a U.S. postage stamp modeled after his likeness, a policy-related appearance and speech at the White House with former President Bill Clinton, and a position as a spokesperson for The Partnership for a Drug-Free America and ONDCP. At twenty-eight years of age, Andy (a.k.a. Andy Mac) is a multidiscipline athlete who in the last four years is the only professional skateboarder to rank in the world's top ten in both street and vert competitions. Andy's style and determination have made him a popular athlete in skateboarding today.
